Leanna Johnson: Artist Statement

Many people ask my why I love photography so much, and I used answer with, “Because it’s fun to do,” but after thinking about it, I found that the true reason I love photography is because of the opportunity I get to make people feel good about themselves. I want everyone to feel they are absolutely beautiful inside and out, because I believe it is important for people to love themselves. Seeing people blossom and come alive in front of the camera is an amazing experience for me to watch and experience. I want to open a studio one day so I can continue to be part of seeing others grow, and to catch memories for my clients to have forever.
In my work I usually try to shoot with natural light, I feel it is warmer, and for me, easier to shoot in. Other than a reflector at times, I don’t use a lot of different technical devices during shoots. When I start shooting someone new, it does start out awkward for me, so I try to understand who they are and what they like to do. Once they start opening up, I in turn understand who they are, and it becomes easier for me to be with them, and shoot them effectively.
In my current collection I tried to concentrate on people, interest in everyday objects, textures, and contrast of colors in my photographs. I tried to tear away from the color side of things and focus more in black and white. I don’t do many black and white photographs, so I wanted to challenge myself and try something new. Throughout taking these photos I really wanted to use my newfound knowledge of photography, such as shutter speed, depth of field, and the light and shadow on things to experiment with. I am happy with what I came up with, and hope you enjoy my photographs as much as I enjoyed taking them.
